Marilyn Crispell is one of the most accomplished improvising pianists of the last two decades. Critic Graham Lock has described her as “the complete virtuoso; the clarity of her touch is astonishing, yet her technique is always at the service of her musical sensibility, the energy shaped by the requirements of the form.” Besides working as a soloist and leader of her own groups, Crispell has collaborated with Anthony Braxton, Reggie Workman, Barry Guy, Henry Grimes, Joëlle Léandre, Mark Helias, and the NOW Orchestra. She’s also performed and recorded music by contemporary composers like John Cage and Pauline Oliveros. Two of Marilyn’s recent ECM releases, Amaryllis and Nothing Ever Was Anyway, were described by the New York Times as “two of the most beautiful piano trio records in recent memory.” Crispell will also be a co-artistic director of VCMI (Vancouver Creative Music Institute), June 17-26. Led by saxophonist Coat Cooke, Vancouver’s NOW Orchestra is recognized as one of the finest large improvising ensembles in the world. Under the umbrella of the New Orchestra Workshop Society (NOW), an organization presenting creative music in Vancouver for 25 years, the large ensemble has been the vehicle for a number of remarkable projects including concerts, modern dance scores, workshops, and recordings. Over the last decade they have performed with George Lewis, Barry Guy, René Lussier, and others. With Ron Samworth guitar, Bill Clark, Kevin Elaschuk trumpets, Graham Ord, Bruce Freedman, Saul Berson saxophones, Ralph Eppel, Brad Muirhead trombones, Paul Blaney, Clyde Reed basses, Kate Hammett-Vaughan vocals, Paul Kikuchi drums.
