Event Description
The Family Album has been years in the making…
Jill Barber has garnered over 30 award nominations including 2 JUNO Awards and has won multiple times at the East Coast Music Awards, Western Canadian Music Awards, Nova Scotia Music Awards and was the recipient of Jazz Artist of the Year from Sirius XM. Jill has also authored two best-selling children's books. Jill has always crafted original songs that evoke the golden age of music. Her last album Fool's Gold debuted at #1 on the Canadian Jazz Charts and spent a remarkable 13 weeks there. The Fool's Gold Canadian Tour concluded at the historic Massey Hall in front of a packed house.
Matthew Barber has become one of Canada's most respected and admired singer songwriters, like his sister, Matthew has been nominated for multiple awards, including a JUNO. Through eight albums, Matthew has stayed close to the folk and roots style of his favourite artists, Neil Young, Bob Dylan but always aware of the hook and the melody. He's had songs appear on countless TV shows and earned a top 5 radio hit with his song "Soft One."
At that night in Toronto at Massey Hall, the magical evening ended with just Jill and her brother Matthew on stage singing the Everly Brothers classic "All I Have To Do Is Dream." It was a culmination of a lifetime of collaboration and it was there, that Jill and Matthew decided to make a record together. The siblings pored through old records, making lists of their favourite songs. They worked out arrangements in Palm Springs, California and then decided that they should bring their own material to go along with the covers they chose.
The Family Album touches on the great Canadian songbook, from Ian Tyson's "Summer Wages," to Neil Young's "Comes A Time," they also delve deeper into honouring the song writing greats Bobby Charles and Townes Van Zandt. The result is a seamless and beautiful work that shows the Barbers ability to interpret the works of others and craft their own songs that fit snug amongst the classics. The harmonies are sure to bring a chill and a tear and the album will become a staple for those who love both of these great Canadian artists.
