About the Festival
Since 1987, Hear it NOW has brought creative, inventive music to Vancouver audiences, showcasing the finest local, national and international players. This year is no exception, with a three-evening lineup including the NOW Orchestra with guest American pianist Marilyn Crispell, the Peggy Lee Band, and granrojo.

=================

The 15-piece NOW Orchestra, fresh from a triumphant appearance at the Lisbon Jazz Festival and mention in the most recent DownBeat Critics’ Poll, continues its collaborative tradition. The orchestra has worked with some of the heaviest players and composers on the creative music scene, including Barry Guy, Rene Lussier, George Lewis, Wadada Leo Smith and now, for the third time, Marilyn Crispell. Under the direction Coat Cooke, the ensemble will premiere new compositions by Cooke, Vancouver guitarist/composer Ron Samworth and Marilyn Crispell.

Marilyn Crispell is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music where she studied classical piano and composition. She discovered jazz through the music of John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and other contemporary jazz players and composers. For ten years she was a member of the Anthony Braxton Quartet and the Reggie Workman Ensemble. She has been a member of the Barry Guy New Orchestra and a frequent guest with his London Jazz Composers Orchestra. Besides working as a soloist and leader of her own groups, Crispell has performed and recorded with many of the great players on the American and European jazz scene. John Pareles of The New York Times writes, "Hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano. She is one of a very few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz."
Tickets: $20 / $18 in advance at Highlife records or at the door.
