LILY FROST comes from a welsh, gypsy and metis blood mix. Since childhood she was teased for her soft, breathy voice. Painfully shy, Lily practically stopped speaking in public.
Diaries and poetry became her sanctuary for self expression. Eventually, she began putting her words to melody, transferring her 8 years of classical piano over to guitar, she started writing songs. Singing became her voice. Now Lily is known for her �sophisticated and tender singing voice� (Bryan Shannon-Scene Mag), and her emotionally-romantic songwriting style which combines a 60�s French flavor, bossa nova and her own bohemian philospohy. In 2000 and 2001 she was nominated for WEST COAST MUSIC AWARD as BEST FEMALE VOCALIST and in 2002 she took it home.
Her performance beginnings were in Montreal �89 while studying jazz and french at Concordia University. Singing 20�s ragtime covers in a group called THE SHEIKS, comprising members of THE GRUESOMES . THE SHEIKS had a release called �THE RECESSION BLUES�. They performed all over Montreal at places like: The Centaur Theatre (alongside the Biddle family), The Bijou, jazz festivals and on the radio in and around Quebec.
To avoid the eyeball freezing winters of Montreal, Lily accepted a 6 month contract in �92 singing in CAIRO EGYPT on a beautiful ship called EL PASHA. Lily performed songs like �La vie en Rose� and �Moonriver� 7 nights a week - no nights off.
From CAIRO she made a splash in relaxing Vancouver B.C. only to spearhead THE WEST COAST COCTAIL SCENE as the frontwoman for �THE COLORIFICS.� Interpreting original retro 50�s style swing, incorporating elegant fashion, dance, foreign accents and wit into the act, THE COLORIFICS soon became West Coast media darlings, packing houses from Van. to L.A. Lily also began songwriting for stage and has a few originals on the third release: �LIVING CITY�. (previous releases include: GIRLIE DOOR & GUILTY PLEASURES) THE COLORIFICS shot a video for Lilys song �SODA POP�, which received MUCH MUSIC play, and reached #1 at University radio garnering huge support from CBC and Seattle radio stations. By �98 the band was touring constantly up and down the West Coast, double billing with: THE ROYAL CROWN REVUE at Seattles PHOENIX UNDERGROUND, REVEREND HORTON HEAT at the SHOWBOX, THE SQIRREL NUT ZIPPERS etc� THE COLORIFICS showcased at NMW, NXNW, NXNE for BMG & CMJ for ATLANTIC RECORDS and FRED DAVIS who were very interested but, Lily was more interested at that time in expanding her songwriting horizons than locking into a cocktail style recording contract.
With a desire for a deeper artistic contribution, Lily began writing more contemporary material and became known for he catchy songwriting,(and co-writing) dramatic stage flair and multimedia performances.(choreography, slide projections and and flash art visuals etc�) The release of her second solo cd �LUNAMARIUM� attracted label attention and Lily was soon signed, re-packaged and re-released internationally in 2001 by NETTWERK RECORDS (SARAH MCGLAUGHLAN, BARENAKED LADIES, DIDO�). ( first solo release was called �COSMICOMIC COUNTRY�) �LUNAMARIUM� was produced in part by CARMEN RIZZO (FIONA APPLE, PRINCE �). NETTWERKS� involvement also led to a video shoot in PARIS for the single �WHO AM I� directed by WILLIAM MORRISON (THE MATHEW GOOD BAND) which received considerable rotation on MUCH and MUCH MORE MUSIC. The remix of the single by CHRIS LORD-ALGE (TINA TURNER, SAVAGE GARDEN) was picked up for the soundtrack of CRAZY BEAUTIFUL (KIRSTEN DUNST). Tours and shows ensued with the likes of; COLD PLAY, HAWKSLEY WORKMAN, 54-40, THE COWBOY JUNKIES, JAY MASCUS (Dsr. Jr-in the UK ) THE DANDY WARHOLS and more.�Lunamarium has that cruising-the autobahn, tanning-on-the Mediterranean, jet-set continental Euro-pop feel�-Warren Footz �Edmonton Mag. �There are no weak tracks on this album, and many small beauties� Robert Everett-Green-The Globe and Mail.
Simultaneously to the NETTWERK deal LILY was and is still fronting �MIMOSA�(mimosamusic.com). Lily and swiss miss co-founder; ANNA LUMIERE both compose for this group. MIMOSA has recently liscenced their first cd; �BUCOLIQUE� to a French record label called �SARAVAH� and is distributed by FESTIVAL in CANADA. �MIMOSA� will be touring and recording in FRANCE in October 2002.
Lily is also leading a side project called �STARR� which is a recording project including co-writes with BERKLEY graduate KRIS JOSS, frontman of MOTION SOUNDTRACK CHAD HORTON, and the reputable producer and frontman from THE ODDS, STEVEN DRAKE. It combines programmed beats with jazz and rock and kicks some serious butt!
Which brings us up to date. In the works is an independent 6 song EP called �SITUATION� which combines poetic lyrics, latin rhythms, acoustic guitar based songs that come from candlelit nights, tears and divine inspirations. It is a very passionate cd , the most genuine, honest and original work to date. These are 100% original Lily songs, co-produced and engineered by LILY and STEVEN DRAKE (FRANCE D�AMOUR, MICHELLE WRIGHT, THE KIM BAND�) at GREENHOUSE STUDIOS in B.C. Arranged and performed mostly by LILY herself and STEVEN DRAKE, with guest appearances including: KINNIE STARR, JESSE ZUBOT and more. Mixed by ROGER SWAN (SWOLLEN MEMBERS) the EP is in pre-release form and is presently independent. Festivals are booked in BERLIN for November.
