AVOIDING MANAGEMENT MISTAKES IN YOUR FIRST SMALL BUSINESS
While there is no doubting that starting one's first small business is a significant accomplishment, being a skilled entrepreneur does not always equal to being a successful manager. As a result, if you have little or no management expertise, you may struggle to manage your first small business.
Although every new business owner will encounter stumbling blocks, there are a few simple techniques to minimize troubles to a minimal. Avoid the following pitfalls as you attempt to successfully run your first small business.
Manifesting Favoritism
Favoritism toward specific team members is likely to engender resentment among individuals who do not receive the same special treatment. Unfortunately, many business owners are unaware that they are engaging in such behavior and hence fail to identify the need for correction. With this in mind, make an attempt to treat all employees fairly in terms of expectations, friendliness, and leniency. For example, if two employees make the identical error and only one receives disciplinary action, your employees are likely to suspect favoritism.
You should use extra caution when hiring friends, family members, or other people with whom you already have a relationship. If your other team members become aware of this link, they will be on the lookout for any evidence of partiality. So, before you commit to hiring someone you know personally, make sure they realize that they will not be given preferential treatment in the job.
Favoritism can successfully lower morale while also attracting the ire of employees. After all, if your favorites are going to get the lion's share of the acclaim, accolades, and special treatment, what incentive do the rest of your team members have to go above and beyond?
Lack of Flexibility in Remote Work
It is critical for all small business owners to recognize that we live in an ever-changing landscape and that the traditional workplace is gradually becoming obsolete - at least for some sorts of employment. As a result, every small business owner wishing to retain and hire top employees should provide flexibility in terms of remote work. If your staff are good at managing their workloads and meeting deadlines, it shouldn't matter where they work, and insisting on them reporting to the office every day is unlikely to win you any favors with them or improve your worker retention figures.
Failure to Show Appropriate Appreciation to Your Employees
It would be an understatement to suggest that many business owners fail to offer their employees sufficient appreciation. While you may believe that paying someone's wage is an adequate degree of appreciation, many members of the workforce might disagree. As a result, you should make it a priority to provide positive reinforcement and acknowledgment to your team members at every chance.
You should regularly award wage hikes and promotions to employees who continuously put forth excellent efforts, in addition to letting them know they're doing a good job. This will not only demonstrate to them that their efforts have not gone unnoticed, but it will also assist increase your worker retention and ensuring that your entire staff has a motivation to work hard.
