The Hidden Cameras’ early days were marked performances which attacked and transcended the staid, dispassionate traditions of rock nightclub culture. With a rotating cast of members, streamers, and audience participation, the shows created a huge buzz for the Toronto band. If their celebratory shows were all, however, the band might not have broken out of its hometown. But, in frontman Joel Gibb, the Hidden Cameras’ have a talent of uncommon melodic and poetic gifts that is international.

With the release of its album The Smell of Our Own, the band became the first Canadian act signed to respected British label Rough Trade. The disc was embraced by indie-rock fans worldwide for the ecstatic pop sounds of its songs. AWOO, The Hidden Cameras’ latest, is a follow-up to their wildly successful second album Mississauga Goddam. Where The Smell of Our Own introduced the group’s chiming, baroque pop, Mississauga Goddam delivered an irresistible set of songs. With AWOO, The Hidden Cameras’ confidently move into the upper echelons of alt-pop bands like Death Cab for Cutie, the Decemberists, and the Magnetic Fields.
