You’ve heard the old saying, “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”? Well, G. Love doesn’t have a lot to complain about, but he’s made Lemonade anyway.

As frontman for trio G. Love and Special Sauce, the Philadelphia soul man (a.k.a. Garrett Dutton) came to the attention of music fans with the group’s 1994 debut self-titled album. Encompassing blues, soul, and even some rap, the disc served as a bold introduction to a laidback band and nearly went gold on the strength of the MTV-spun “Cold Beverage.” Subsequent albums like Electric Mile and Philadelphonic and tours, including one with the H.O.R.D.E. tour, ensured G. Love and Special Sauce’s rep as an act whose eclectic and enigmatic blend of loose soul, hip-hop, and blues grooves turns every show into a block-rockin’ party. But it’s Lemonade, album number seven, and the second on Jack Johnson’s label Brushfire, that has elevated this mesmerizing live act to the top of the charts with groove-oriented, soul-drenched, blues-infused hip-hop like “Hot Cookin’” (with Donavon Frankenreiter) and “Beautiful” (with Johnson).
