. Friday, Jan 19th IMU presents The SKATOMATICS Tour Kick-Off party w/ The FURIOS, The DREADNOUGHTS & TheSET @ The MEDIA CLUB, 695 Cambie . 8pm / $10

The DREADNOUGHTS - Ball-busting Celt-punk from Vancouver's newest group of drunken misfits, with a shot of pirate-shanty, a shot of Irish melody and a triple-chaser of street punk. The result is a powerful live sound, with whirling fiddles, mandolins and accordions inviting you into a world of drink and debauchery. Imagine Rancid had their tour bus hijacked by a group of inebriated gypsies... and you're beginning to understand. Be sure to come out and catch these young up-and-comers who recently opened for The Real McKenzies!

The SKATOMATICS - Fresh from last month's sold out CD release show at the Lamplighter, The Skatomatics will draw you irresistably to your feet with their blend of 4x4 time and a brass section. Featuring former members of Edmonton's Mad Bomber Society and Halifax ska pioneers Dr. Skankworthy, The Skatomatics bonded over their love for bands like The Police, Sublime, King Apparatus and The Clash.

The FURIOS deliver an irresistible blend of ska, reggae, and catchy punk with solid, memorable vocals and empowering, danceable anthems that range from head bobbin' slow skanks to all out, full throttle, pedal-to-the-metal ska romps. Featuring a three piece horn section complemented by distinct songwriters and vocalists, The Furios shine the brightest when seen and heard live. The six piece band rocks, jumps, bumps and dances through set after set creating a party atmosphere that has made them a favorite with audiences. With 11 Canadian tours under their belt and dates on last year's Vans Warped Tour, The Furios have shared stages with The Real McKenzies, Fishbone, Bedouin Soundclash, The Planet Smashers, DOA, The Smugglers and many others.

TheSET are an emerging band from Victoria with roots in the emo/screamo/punk movement that understands the importance of standing out. The band's catchy hooks, anthemic choruses, and unique voice of lead singer Martin Macphail combine to paint a lyrical picture full of melancholy images and philosophical queries, as well as lament for lost love and death. Theset (pronounced The Set) has been on tour in support of their debut CD "The Philosophy of Time Travel", recorded by Adam Sutherland.

theset (Truth)

It can seem damn near impossible to tell who’s who in the Canadian indie music scene these days, where everyone and their brother is playing in a so-called emo band with straight, black haircuts and trendy white studded belts. As distinctions between bands disappear, and the scene becomes more and more crowded, a band is emerging from Victoria, B... more info
