A sophisticated lyrical technique and his flowing syncopation are the cornerstones of the Chicago native's jazz-rap, which is literate, intelligent, and full of nimbly performed conscious rhymes. His 1997 album, One Day It'll All Make Sense, included guests such as Lauryn Hill and Q-Tip and made Common a major player. It was his breakthrough album Like Water for Chocolate that established Common as one of the most exciting, intelligent rappers in contemporary hip-hop. By turns hilarious, poetic, musical and intensely personal, and set against a backdrop of thick, layered funk, the album landed on several Best-of-2000 lists and earned Common a Grammy nomination for "Best Rap Solo Performance" (for the track "The Light"). Be, his latest, is no less astounding, and features production from Kanye West and guest appearances by The Last Poets, John Legend and John Mayer. It's being hailed as one of his best records yet, which makes it one of the best hip-hop records of the year.
