Griph, you do have that backwards. BR doesn't hate Victoria, Victoria hates them. No Substance has to be the most aptly titled record in years. - Tue, 22 Mar 2005 6:20pm

Funny, so where did I hear that when they last played Victoria a few years ago, they had total hatred for the local crew and thought that the place they jammed at was very backwards (or something like that). Course, I didn't witness this myself. - Tue, 22 Mar 2005 6:34pm

yeah on second thought, they probably did bitch on the local crew and venue... Why? BECAUSE THEY'RE ASSHOLES! That I have witnessed firsthand. - Tue, 22 Mar 2005 10:20pm

FYI Myself and Kenton Kroker (Hoofrarump for those of you that can recall) put on BR at the White Eagle Hall with Coffin Break (Seattle) and Section 46 and Shutdown way back when No Control was just released (early nineties '91 I think?) I will confirm what Tyler has said, Absolute assholes. I personally argued with, cajoled, and guilted Greg Graffin into coming to Victoria (lead asshole singer) for 2 hours over the phone, 2 days before the show because he wanted to cancel the show. His problem? He had to take a flight to catch up with his bandmates b/c he had just flown back to LA to see his girlfriend, yadayadayada. This was after we negotiated from a $1200 guarantee down to $700, never mind the hotel we had to book for Mr. Graffin and other requests from his mates. I remind you this was back in the early 90's when punk meant punk and people scoffed at a show for more than 6 bucks,or we had punk bands signing with majors or punk bands were selling a 100 000 records or whatever these bands sales are nowadays. We had to charge $7 just to make it work.( I know that seems like nothing now but this is 15 years ago!) Very disappointing, after reading the lyrics from the album, and all the hype in MRR fanzine etc. Despite it being a huge show (400+ peeps) and the enthusiatic response from the crowd (people went off), Mr. Graffin's response: " yeah, I guess it was alright for a small town, say where is the Waddling Dog anyway?" He had asked for a hotel near the airport so he could catch his flight back to nowhere, guess the sign on the only highway into town wasn't big enough? Graffin even had the gall to complain about Coffin Break's merchandise table and came to us asking if they were giving a % to the promoter (us) or if he would have to collect from Coffin Break himself? What the fuck? The only saving grace was Jay Bently, the bass player from BR who ended up being a great guy and helped solve a lot of the "attitude" coming from the rest of the band. Needless to say, I believe this is where the sour relationship with BR started and for all I care I hope it remains.

PS. Thanks Griphin for posting those Nirvana at the forge pics, such sweet memories and even a photo of myself in the pit, head full of acid, ears full of love!! Anybody remember Jaret Engstrom (RIP) landing a massive hork on the lead singer from Hells Bells? Nearly cost him his life that night (bouncer rage) but he did end up getting to see Nirvana after some major ass kissing with management. teehee - Tue, 29 Mar 2005 8:44pm

I heartily concur. BR were the epitome of shithead California punker assholes when they played the WEH way back when. Choice quotes that I will remember forever:

"We come from L.A. where they have these things called "monitors"

"Were used to playing to 5,000 people"

...and every song prefaced with "The name of this song is..."

I seem to remember them busting up the monitor system in protest costing the promoters lots of dough. And I also remember one guy being OK but I can't remember who it was. The singer was the most condescending asshole I've ever met in the music biz. And all their songs sounded like the only one I had heard to date, "You". Black Flag would eat these guys for breakfast. - Fri, 1 Apr 2005 4:42pm

I fergot about the monitor comment. Even though I've really liked the band for quite a few years, I really hope that Bad Religion never play the island again. NO problem about the photo link Paul, I didn't even know photos existed other then the ones that Q FM took, I was actually looking to see if the gig had somehow showed up via the bootlegs when I found that link (I know Vancouver's set the next night was released onto CD). - Sat, 2 Apr 2005 1:09pm
