Among the multitude of singer/songwriters that have emerged in the last few years, Jason Mraz is unique. Bringing a funny, playful sensibility to his songs, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native has risen from his humble beginnings on the coffeehouse circuit to theatres and arenas. Songs like his 2002 funky, mischievous hit “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)” off his debut Waiting for My Rocket to Come and tours with friends like the Dave Matthews Band have helped propel this young star to greater public exposure.
His singular talent is even more apparent on his latest album, MR. A-Z. The clever wordplay of the disc’s title extends to the first single, aptly titled “Wordplay”. Both a catchy pop number and a satire of what a first single should be, the hit is one of a number of fresh, groovy and cheekily self-aware tracks on the record. Other songs like “Clockwatching”, “Geek in the Pink” and “Did You Get My Message?” are just as weird and wonderful. It’s this knack for crowd-pleasing and smile-inducing tunes, along with a crack band and his engaging live persona, that have combined to make a Jason Mraz set one of the most entertaining shows you’ll see this year.
