About

The Malcontents

The Malcontents are a ska band out of Lafayette, Indiana, but ever since their Indianapolis debut at the end of 2002, their high-energy songs and awesome live shows won them a second place to call home. The Indianapolis audience embraced their combination of socially-conscious lyrics, infectious grooves, and their frisky but friendly stage behavior. The Malcontents style reflects the optimism of youth and the constant quest of every generation to create a new status quo through world domination. Not since James Brown, has anyone been able to create music that is politically aware, yet still calls your ass to the dance floor.

The Malcontents are a menagerie of eight musicians with undeniable personality, chemistry, and playing ability. The members of the band originated from several parts of the Midwest and formed the band in Lafayette, Indiana. Although they have only been playing together since the fall of 2002, the band has gained a strong and growing following in their surrogate home of Indianapolis and surrounding areas. They are a third wave ska band, from the Midwest which means they know how to blend ska, rock, soul and anything else that can be thrown at them. There is an unmistakable mark of originality on their sound. It is twisted and a bit dark compared to their SoCal predecessors and contemporaries, but the underlying theme of the band is to play music that has a lot of groove, fun, and an energetic heart. They all know how to skank and they all know how to mosh. They enjoy doing both and it comes through in their sound.

This is a band that must be seen live. The Malcontents buzz and draw has been carved from the super-charged energy of their sets. The seven non-seated players are in constant motion from start to finish. They have made a name for themselves virtually overnight by word of mouth; the favorite reaction to receive has been, "I dont like ska, but I love the Malcontents".

The Malcontents as a whole are an involved and lighthearted group of individuals; they work to be socially and politically aware in order to be positive influences to their audience. The band stays connected to the issues they sing about by supporting the Positive Youth Foundation and the Anti-Racist Action Association. They can also be spotted regularly supporting the Indianapolis local music scene.

The Malcontents were finalists in the 2003 Benchmark Records Battle of the Bands and the band has recently played at Purdue University, the Midwest Music Summit, and the IMN Showcase 9. In addition, the band was named by Editor Steve Hayes on IndianapolisMusic.net as one of the best newcomers of 2003.

The Malcontents are: vocalist/guitarist Ryan Fohl, bassist/vocalist Sharon Koltick, guitarist Toby Russell, drummer Emmett Hall, slide trombonist Jason Inman, trumpeter Aaron Copeland, trumpeter Cory Shields, and valve trombonist Jon Richard.
