Rock, dance, electronica, folksy acoustics, orchestral soundscapes--South has always been impossible to pin down. Now, with “A Place in Displacement”, the first single off their new album, the trio conjures up vintage New Order with a dance anthem mellow with regret.

In keeping with the band’s chameleon-like past, no two songs on South’s latest, Adventures in the Underground Journey to the Stars, sound alike. There’s Jeff Buckley/Nick Drake-inspired balladry, George Harrison-evoking pop and more on this, the group’s third record.

Since forming in 1999 the London-based act has also scored soundtracks for the film Sexy Beast and US TV dramas The OC and Six Feet Under. Comparisons to the Stone Roses, Mercury Rev, Oasis, Jesus and Mary Chain and Radiohead have followed the band, attesting to both the strength and hookiness of South’s Britpop and the group’s shape-shifting abilities.
