Rock the Nation America recently announced the 2014 Paganfest America lineup. If youve ever seen a past Paganfest tour, then you know that the tour has hosted such bands as Ensiferum, Turisas, Alestorm, Tyr, Trollfest, and Heidevolk.

Folk metal has been growing considerably over the past 20 years, debuting as early as the early 80s. Paganfest America, however, has only been up and running since 2009, but it has been putting top-of-the-line folk metal acts on the stage ever since.

Headlining this year, in 2014, is Korpiklaani. Korpiklaani, which is Finnish for Wilderness clan, is obviously from Finland, and were formerly known as Shaman. Formed as early as 1993, the band has seen two different name changes, ultimately finalizing on the current name. The band didnt just change its name, they also changed their music. The traditional yoik vocals and the use of the Smi language were dropped, and the synthesizer was replaced with real folk instruments. Their current lineup has 6 band members, after having seen 16 members come and go.

Supporting acts on this years festival are Turisas, also from Finland, Chthonic from Taiwan, Varg from Germany, and Winterhymn from the U.S.

It is very early in the morning and still dark outside. Next to two enormous heaps of luggage on trolleys which can barely hold, we find a unusual group. Some of them sip coffee; others drink the last bits of luke beer and tell lame jokes. This is the band Korpiklaani and they are waiting for their plane to catch after a long and exhausting tour. ... more info

Prepare yourselves for another wave of fist-pumping beat, catchy melodies and undisputed attitude, as the band is preparing for the launch of its 4th opus in Battle Metal. Hailing from Hämeenlinna, Finland, Turisas is named after an ancient... more info

While Taiwan is considered home of Austronesian peoples, and a mystic island nation in the Orient, advanced technologies and modern cities are also part of the image of Taiwan. The metal band Chthonic has given the best interpretation to the contrasting images of the country. Chthonic's lyrics are inspired by Taiwanese mythology, folk stories, a... more info

Winterhymn (Cold-Blooded American Folk Metal)

On distant, misty plains, you hear the sound of steel clanking on steel; the gallop of a thousand frenzied horses; the swollen beat of the war drums. You hear some men cry out in victory, but even more cry out in pain as their last breath is forced from their lungs. What you hear, is Winterhymn. With the fantasy and escapism of Power Metal and b... more info
